چکیده

Current mobile phone models are equipped with a variety of sensors and ever increasing processing power. The internal sensors have been employed for various applications, ranging from classical geo-location systems over activity recognition using the native 3D accelerometer to augmented reality. However, there are application areas which require sensors that today can not yet be found in mobile phones, e.g. due to cost or size restrictions. This is especially true for scenarios involving air quality information such as the concentration of potentially harmful gases – like carbon monoxide (CO), dioxide (CO2) or ozone (O3) – or the level of particulate matter (PM). The importance of such applications grows with society’s concern about how these pollutants affect a person’s health or the environment. In the past decades, an increasing number of studies investigated the effects of particulate matter on people’s health. The results are that fine dust can be a serious hazard, contributing to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. This is why regulations aiming at the reduction of man-made particulate matter have been increasingly set by authorities around the world. This demonstration shows the TECO Envboard, an environmental sensing platform for research and development purposes that carries a wide range of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) sensors, many of which are today not yet built into mobile phones. The Envboard is currently used to investigate the feasibility of particulate matter measurements using a cheap, commodity dust sensor: the Sharp GP2Y1010.

The TECO Envboard: A mobile sensor platform for accurate urban sensing - And more

Participatory Urban Sensing scenarios have increasingly been studied in the past years. At the same time, society’s concern about the effects of pollutants on people’s personal health as well as on the environment grew. This, in conjunction with studies that helped to give a better understanding of those effects, lead to new and stricter regulations and standards set up by governments. Such sta...

Assessing the Utility of Low-Cost Particulate Matter Sensors over a 12-Week Period in the Cuyama Valley of California

The use of low-cost air quality sensors has proliferated among non-profits and citizen scientists, due to their portability, affordability, and ease of use. Researchers are examining the sensors for their potential use in a wide range of applications, including the examination of the spatial and temporal variability of particulate matter (PM). However, few studies have quantified the performanc...

Spatio-Temporal Variations in the Associations between Hourly PM2.5 and Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) from MODIS Sensors on Terra and Aqua.

Recent studies have explored the relationship between aerosol optical depth (AOD) measurements by satellite sensors and concentrations of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5). However, relatively little is known about spatial and temporal patterns in this relationship across the contiguous United States. In this study, we investigated the relationship between U...

Mapping of Chlorophyll and Suspended Particulate Matter Maps from Chris Imagery of the Oostende Core Site

The image set created on 5 August 2003 by CHRIS/PROBA is analyzed to assess the feasibility of producing suspended particulate matter (SPM) and chlorophyll (CHL) maps. To produce these maps images are first destriped, atmospherically corrected and georeferenced. Once the data processing is finished, the results are compared with seaborne measurements and data products retrieved from other ocean...

Estimating Hourly Concentrations of PM2.5 across a Metropolitan Area Using Low-Cost Particle Monitors

There is concern regarding the heterogeneity of exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) across urban areas leading to negatively biased health effects models. New, low-cost sensors now permit continuous and simultaneous measurements to be made in multiple locations. Measurements of ambient PM were made from October to April 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 to assess the spatial and temporal variabi...
